Viking Hoard to go on Display
Wednesday 30 January to Sunday 9 March

At the Salt Museum, 162 London Road, Northwich, CW9 8AB.

An impressive hoard of Viking silver arm bands found in Huxley, Cheshire in 2004 is to be displayed at the Salt Museum.

The find, made by metal detectorist Steve Reynolds, consists of silver bracelets and an ingot and fragments of sheet lead. Bracelets of this type have been found in other hoards in the north west and North Wales. They are a type believed to have been produced by Norse settlers in Dublin during the late 9th and early 10th centuries AD. The hoard could therefore be bullion buried for safekeeping by Viking refugees who settled in Cheshire and Wirral after being expelled from Dublin by the Irish in 902 AD. Alternatively, it may have belonged to Vikings who were raiding this part of Cheshire, sailing up the then navigable River Gowy from the Mersey estuary.

The hoard has been purchased with HLF funding as a partnership and is owned jointly by Cheshire County Council, the Grosvenor Museum and National Museums Liverpool.

Admission to see the hoard is free. There is a small charge to view the other galleries.

There will be a number of special events linked to this display which will be featured in future press releases. Details
