Home is Where the Hearth Is
Home fires will be burning at Tatton Park's historic Old Hall next weekend when the Thomas Stanley Retinue 'return' to their former home. On Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th May the Old Hall becomes home to a re-enactment group portraying the Stanley family, the fifteenth century owners of the first Hall at this historic estate. But the Stanleys may be in for a mixed reception. Brothers Sir William and Lord Thomas Stanley were notorious for changing sides at the Battle of Bosworth Field in 1485, some say directly contributing to the loss of the crown by Richard III. Sitting on the sidelines with their own private armies, the two brothers watched to see which way the battle would go. Would it be Richard or Henry? In the event they came down on Henry's side thus changing the course of history. Mick Ricketts, Old Hall Steward commented "Š. There will be plenty of opportunities to boo and hiss or to cheer and applaud as the Stanleys hold court at the Old Hall. Visitors can watch the thrust and parry of the arms drill and see authentic cooking over open fires, learning more about domestic life and the life of the battlefield. Watch the Stanleys fight for ladies' favours and for a small charge, visitors can practise their archery skills and try on armour (free). The atmospheric Old Hall will also be open for freeflow tours. The Thomas Stanley Retinue at the Old Hall takes place from 12pm-5pm (last entry 4pm) on Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th May 2008.
