Green-Fingered Future
Planting the Seeds for a Green-Fingered Future

Mighty oaks from little acorns grow. On the 5th February, four Knutsford primary school children helped to plant what is hoped will become a thriving indigenous oak tree in Tatton Park, leaving a lasting legacy for Cheshire Year of Gardens 08.

Following in the footsteps of their illustrious predecessors, such as the landscape architect Humphrey Repton (who planned much of the Park and Garden design we enjoy today), the pupils from Egerton Primary have now made their own mark on the historic landscape.

This tree-planting scheme co-ordinated by Cheshire Landscape Trust, with funding from Cheshire's Year of Gardens, is one of a number of 'legacies' from Cheshire's Year of Gardens '08. Tatton Park is just one of 28 locations throughout Cheshire and Warrington which have been chosen to receive an oak tree as a permanent reminder of this special year, celebrating the beauty and diversity of Cheshire's gardens.

The pupils aided Cllr Neville Price, Chairman of Cheshire County Council who was invited to Tatton Park for the day. Cllr Price commented "the pupils were invited to help with the planting as Tatton is their 'back garden' and they are very much the future visitors of this and other Cheshire gardens. Hopefully we will have created a few future gardeners today and we should look out for them showcasing at the RHS in a few years' time!."

This new addition to the gardens joins trees planted over 300 years ago in the original design for Tatton's gardens. The oak has been planted in 'Tower Wood', opposite the Tower Garden, an area with a number of English oaks
and surrounded by beautiful camellias. The camellias will be at their best in the next two to three weeks and visitors are encouraged to come see them and the new sapling!

Tatton's Gardens are open Tuesday to Sunday from 11am-4pm (last entry 3pm) up until 14th March. High Season opening times (from Saturday 15th March) 10am-6pm (last entry 5pm).
