An Audience with Tatton's Green Fingered Guru
Not many people can boast a back garden as big as Sam Youd's. For nearly 30 years Sam has lived on site in the Gardener's Cottage at Tatton Park and worked in its beautifully landscaped gardens. No-one knows its shapes and textures more intimately, or is more familiar with the changes in its moods and hues throughout the seasons. To mark this phenomenal anniversary and Cheshire's Year of Gardens '08, Sam will be sharing his gardening experiences at an exclusive evening event on Friday May 30th. The evening commences at 6pm with Pimms on the Italian Terrace and a rare opportunity for guests to explore the gardens 'after-hours', including seeing the exciting newly commissioned work for the Tatton Park Biennial. Guests will then be directed to the Tenants' Hall to enjoy 'Bothies, Bell Jars and Brussels Sprouts', as Sam shares amusing stories, inside knowledge, and experience gained in over 45 years in gardening. Sam has tended much more than the gardens at Tatton Park. He and his wife Gail have also brought up their family of seven children; the gardens providing them with over 50 acres of a fabulous playground! A place as special as Tatton does not take long to seep under your skin and Sam has passed on his gardening enthusiasm to all his children. In fact Sam's youngest son, James, has also gone into horticulture and works as a gardener at Arley Hall near Northwich. Living on site has provided Sam with nearly three decades of eventful Tatton moments. He has a story for every occasion, many of which involve the over 130, 000 visitors who annually walk past his front garden. Many of these visitors have been known to interrupt the family mid-meal by knocking on the front door and asking for a tour! One afternoon, returning to his house in the Kitchen Garden, Sam was berated at his garden gate by an irate couple who thought he had turned up late to guide them on the 'Medieval Old Hall' tour (not overly similar to Sam's Edwardian cottage). Sam lives and breathes the Gardens at Tatton Park and considers himself extremely lucky to have had the opportunity to live and work here. Sam commented "it is wonderful living on site as I never miss anything happening in the gardens. I've been very fortunate to have been able to make a career out of my hobby. Even after 45 years gardening and 29 years here at Tatton, there is still so much more to learn. This is a great opportunity for me share my enthusiasm for gardening and for us all to join in with an enjoyable evening". 'An Audience with Sam Youd' takes place on Friday May 30th 2008 from 6pm. Ticket prices: £20 per person (including Pimms refreshments, Garden entry and 'An Audience with Sam Youd'). Call 01625 374428 or visit www.tattonpark.org.uk |
