Tatton's Globetrotting Trotters
The Great Continental Emigration Tatton Park has always known its residents are made of good, strong stock but in recent months our continental cousins have begun clamouring after this special Cheshire pedigree. Home Farm, one of the most popular attractions at Tatton Park, which received Rare Breed Accreditation status earlier this year, has recently had particular success in selling its rare breed pedigree stock abroad. Jayne Chapman, Farm Co-ordinator commented 'sales like these go a long way to promoting the rare breeds we are trying so hard to conserve'. Staff at the Farm bid 'auf weidersehn' to two particular favourites this year. Tatton Skylark, a 'Large Black' pig and daughter of a Home Farm favourite, Lottie, was purchased in the summer by Janice Wood, a local breeder of Large Black pigs, who was quick to notice Skylark's special qualities and interested in this particular bloodline. Tatton Skylark made her debut at many shows this year, coming 1st at our very own Cheshire County Show, 2nd at the Royal and gained another 1st at Great Yorkshire. At the Royal Show she not only caught the judges' eye but also that of a German visitor from Munich University who saw great potential in Skylark as a breeding sow. The University want to use her to cross-breed with the Iberian pig and produce a new hybrid breed called the 'Black Trotter'. Tatton Skylark made her exciting journey to Germany at the beginning of September, arriving in Munich the following day along with eight others of the -cont'd- Large Black breed. She travelled well and has settled into her new life in a foreign country. This is another great opportunity to promote the Park as she carries the name of Tatton overseas. The second adventurer is Jubilee Jester, or JJ, the first foal born to Blossom, in the Farm's Jubilee year. JJ was initially bought by the famous breeder of Shires and Clydesdales, Tony Bull. Mr Bull then sold JJ to his German partner Karen Anger. Soon JJ's good looks were spotted by Lutz Helbig in Dudeldorf, which is now JJ's permanent new home, shared with three other geldings. JJ will be broken to ride at three years old and will hopefully go on to give demonstrations, helping to promote these fabulous animals. Bidding farewell to these Home Farm favourites is never easy as Jayne Chapman commented 'it's a difficult day for us when we finally say goodbye to our animals - it's like sending your eldest born off on a permanent gap year. But we've done our best to bring them up properly, teach them good manners and to be polite to their hosts!' Jayne continued 'We are really proud of these fantastic animals and it's great to see them happy in their new homes. Tatton's name is now not only known around the county shows but also on new shores. Who knows what is to follow and where our animals will lead us to next?'.
